Intergranular stress generation during high temperature creep-fatigue loading

Intergranular stresses, generated during cyclic loading of AISI type 316H stainless steel can significantly affect the creep deformation of this material. However, micromechanics controlling creep behaviour under complex load-history is not well understood. The proposed experiment will look at high temperature evolution of intergranular stress during dwell period of cyclic loading of this material and will relate the response with macroscopic behaviour. The experimental data will be compared and interpreted using elastic plastic self-consistent modelling. Overall, the experimental results will contribute to the on-going development of better life time assessment techniques of materials used in nuclear power plants.
