Optical properties of porewater dissolved organic matter and bulk characteristics of bottom waters and sediments of the Baltic Sea

DOI

Pore water dissolved organic matter fluorescence (FDOM) parameters were collected by Rhizon samplers from the water 2 cm above the sediment and the top 10 cm of the sediment cores, which were recovered using GeMax sampler, parameters (pH, Salinity, Oxygen) measured using deepening probes in the bottom water 2cm above the sediment surface. Porosity and loss on ignition index were evaluated via slicing the top 10 cm of the sediment cores recovered by GeMax sediment corer at 2 cm intervals. These samples were collected between 2020 and 2021 during cruises onboard RV Oceania (Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences), which took place in spring, autumn, and winter, to the Central and Southern Baltic Sea, i.e., Eastern Gotland Basin, Bornholm Basin, and Gdansk Basin. The pore water fluorescence was collected to characterize dissolved organic matter quality within sediments. Loss on ignition index was used to evaluate the organic matter content within sediments. Bottom water parameters and porosity were collected for auxiliary station characterization.
