Evolving microemulsions - tuning selectivity in oxidation reactions

We have begun to explore the synthesis, reactivity and physicochemical properties of a number of surface-active metal complexes, to devise a method for the catalytic decontamination of chemical warfare agents (CWAs), utilizing the compartmentalisation of microemulsions as a means of both solubilsing the agent in question (substrate) and a decontamination catalyst system. Catalysis in microemulsions is relatively poorly explored mainly due to the difficulties encountered in product isolation, yet they have a number of important advantages; high reaction rates, imparted via high interfacial contact areas, and the ability to dissolve a broad range of reagents and substrates. We have shown (JACS, 2009) that it is possible to harness the inherent compartmentalisation of the microemulsion to achieve enhanced rates of reaction and to exert control over product selectivity.
