Determination of the low temperature crystal structure of Fe3O4

DOI

The aim of this proposal is to determine the crystal structure of Fe3O4 (magnetite) in its low temperature phase below the Verwey transition. Despite a considerable amount of work, the structure is still unresolved, with various structures proposed. This is a controversial topic, and it has been shown that previous claims of orbital ordering in magnetite are dependent on the assumed crystal structure.
