The occupancy of the Wyckhoff position in Co8Zn6+yMn8-y-zFez

PID

Recently, magnetic skyrmions have been observed for members of the sample series Co6+xZn6+yMn8-x-y, x, y ≤ 4. Based on these studies, we have investigated Fe-substituted material Co8Zn8Mn4-zFez, again finding evidence for the formation of skyrmions. Since in bulk materials skyrmions only form in crystallographic structures without inversion symmetry, the question arises if a random site occupation also “randomizes” the inversion symmetry and thus affects the formation of skyrmions. In this situation, we propose to carry out a detailed structural analysis for a series of samples Co8Zn6+yMn8-x-y-zFez. This way, we wish to determine if Mn and Fe do occupy the Wyckhoff 12d positions (as suggested by stoichiometry), or if these elements are distributed randomly over all crystallographic positions.
