Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.In 1967, data and information were obtained on cohorts of teachers in six County Boroughs relating to reasons for choosing to work in one geographical area rather than another. This study is a follow-up to the 1967 study.

Main Topics: Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions Number of years in previous school, number of school changes, promotion since 1967, present status, whether respondent has ever seriously considered giving up teaching (reasons explored in detail, e.g. promotion, obtained post elsewhere, cheaper accommodation, to be near relations). Additional reasons in order of importance. Background Variables Age, sex, marital status, place of birth, type of school attended.

In 1967, stratified random sample in six areas. In 1972, residues of 1967 sample still in post in Reading and Stoke on Trent; together with those who moved out of the two areas or changed occupation
