Theama Theater

DOI

The theatre company THEAMA (Theatre for the Disabled) was founded in Athens in 2010 and is pioneering institution, the first professional theatre ensemble primarily composed of disabled artists. The actors are affiliated with Greek Association of Actors, asserting their right to equal representation in the performing arts. The company operates under an umbrella of inclusivity, involving actors and performers without disabilities as part of the ensemble. Additionally, they organise drama workshops to establish the first inclusive Drama Academy for disabled and non-disabled artists.

Within this framework, the company played an active role in repealing a presidential decree enforced by the Greek Ministry of Culture. This decree prevented disabled individuals from enrolling in and graduating from Higher Drama Academies. Furthermore, THEAMA takes on the critical challenge of promoting accessibility in the arts. They emphasize that all venues and backstage areas should accessible for both audiences and artists with mobility disabilities. In a similar vein, THEAMA advocates for audiences with sensory disabilities, asserting their right to accessible content through the use of captions, sign language, and audio descriptions. The company also offers modified performances tailored for individuals with learning disabilities.

THEAMA is also a participant in INCLUSIVE THEATER(S), a project initiated by Creative Europe (2019 – 2021). They collaborate with partners from Italy, the UK, Serbia, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. The project's central goal is to generate interest among theatre audiences by employing inclusive practices for visually and hearing-impaired individuals and attract new audiences. This endeavour aims to make such practices more mainstream in Europe.
