Neutron scattering from chiral magnetic textures in Fe1-xCoxGe

DOI

We wish to investigate helimegnetic ordering in epilayers of Fe1-xCoxGe known from bulk measurements as a helimagnetic material with a high ordering temperature. Strain in epilayers drastically reduces the lengthscale of spin ordering as well as enhancing ordering temperatures although the mechanism for these favourable enhancements is little understood. In thin films skyrmion textures are stabilised over a much greater phase space than that for bulk. We will measure the helical period in these alloys complimenting our neutron experiment with electrical measurements of the topological Hall effect originating from skyrmion spin textures. We aim to ascertain the influence of strain induced by the change in lattice parameter of FeGe upon Co substitution relative to the substrate epitaxy. We will also search for evidence of elliptical in-plane skyrmions.
