Sustainable polymeric deposition aids

DOI

This is a new programme of work and a collaboration between CCLRC, Oxford, Unilever and Manchester. It is concerned with polymer aided deposition to solid substrates, using polymers requiring minimal chemical conversion and from sustainable sources. The focus of this study are two cellulosic polymer of high molecular weight with different charge densities, in mixtures with alkylbenzene sulphonate surfactants. Measurements of adsorption at the silica/water interface using QCM have shown a synergistic adsorption behaviour, with differences that are related to differences in polymer hydrophobicity. The aim of this proposal is to determine the structure of the adsorbed layer using NR on SURF and to confirm whether these systems form multilayers at both the liquid solid and air liquid interfaces. The student Karla Webb is in the third year of her D.Phil at Manchester
