Stress evaluation of RAFM weld for fusion reactor

Reduced Activation Ferritic-Martensitic steels (RAFMs) are the primary candidate structural material for the FDS series LiPb blankets for fusion reactors, in particular the Dual Functional Lithium Lead Test Blanket Module (DFLL-TBM) for the ITER facility. We propose to carry out a series of residual stress measurements on RAFM components with different welding techniques and post weld treatments. The proposed experiments form part of a larger research programmeled by the PI and funded by National Science Foundation China. In this programme, we are attempting to study the theory and technology of flawless welding, and the corrosion behavior of welds in liquid LiPb. The measured stresses will also be used to validate the numerical simulation of the welding process. Both the measurement results and simulations will help us evaluate and control the residual stresses in RAFM welds.
