Surfactant ionic liquids as tuneable structured media

DOI

This proposal aims to explore aqueous phase structures of a new range of ionic liquid surfactants (IL-surfs). These IL-surfs have interesting potential applications as reaction media, where the underlying phase structure can be tuned to provide a new dimension for control over organic reactions. The dilute micellar properties of some compounds based on quaternary ammonium (C4-C20) AOT (Fig 3. cations 1-7, anion a) and dodecylsulphates (SDS-type) have already been studied using SANS, revealing that the self-assembly behaviour of IL-surfs is in fact not so different from regular surfactants. Based on test SANS results it has been possible to fine tune the anion/cation structures to generate a new family of surfactants that are also ¿true¿ ILs . The compounds exhibit mesophases and good aqueous solubility; hence they can be used as structured reaction matrices.
