Magnetic excitations from optimally doped BSCCO in the pseudogap phase

DOI

We plan to study the temperature dependence of magnetic excitations in the optimally doped high-Tc superconductor Bi$2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O${8+\delta}$ (BSCCO). We have previously performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the same BSCCO single crystals at 10~K and 100~K on MAPS, and the results suggest that the magnetic excitations from BSCCO above and below the superconducting temperature (Tc ~ 92 K) are likely due to local moments rather than coming from itinerant electrons, although there is a direct interplay between the two (the "resonance" feature observed near 42 meV). We plan to further study the magnetic excitations from BSCCO at higher temperatures, near where the pseudogap disappears (T* around 160~K). This will provide important information on how quasi-particles and electron pairing affect the magnetic response in the pseudogap phase.
