Reviving Rhenen

The Odyssee-project 'Reviving Rhenen' resulted in 2011 in a full catalogue of all graves with their goods excavated in 1951 at the Donderberg in Rhenen (Province of Utrecht) by the ROB. Additionally, several articles were published on this subject. The Rhenen cemetery is the largest, longest-used and richest Frankish cemetery in the Netherlands and thus one of our most important early-medieval features, in both a national and international context. It has long been felt a serious problem that the Rhenen material is not accessible for research and comparison. The Rhenen linear cemetery contained over 1100 graves, covering the full period between c. 375 and 750 AD. It is therefore a perfect source for the study of continuity and change within these 'Dark Ages'. The graves yielded over 3000 objects, now in the Collection of the National Museum of Antiquities, including the largest, most coherent and best assemblages of medieval jewellery, beads, weaponry, ceramics and re-used Roman objects in the Netherlands, that can widely serve as a reference point. The catalogue will be used to facilitate further research and for communicating this heritage within Rhenen itself.
