In de Bewaarschool in Best, waar deze man gelegerd was tijdens de algehele mobilisatie van 1939-1940, werden hij en zijn collega’s totaal overvallen door de Duitse inval in Mei 1940. In de bezettingstijd verbleef hij op De Veluwe, waar hij met een houten geweer het terrein van Radio Kootwijk moest bewaken.
