Prevalence and Characterization of Antimicrobial Resistance in retail food in Mumbai, India

This study was undertaken to isolate and characterize antibiotic resistance in commonly consumed foods (Chicken, Mung Bean Sprouts and Marine Fish) in Mumbai,India. Antibiotic resistant microorganisms and metagenomic DNA were isolated and characterized from the foods. The Antibiotic Resistance (AR) profiles of the microflora and the metagenomic DNA were analyzed. Horizontal gene transfer of R-plasmids and AR genes from resistant bacteria to recipient bacteria was also demonstrated.
