This dataset consists of nine data tables and is part of the DFG SPP 527 Infrastructure area - International Ocean Drilling Programme³ (IODP³) project Exp392EventStratigraphy: high resolution bulk stable carbon isotope stratigraphy of major Paleogene events drilled during IODP Expedition 392 on Agulhas Plateau. The reported data enable a clear identification and geochemical characterization of the recovered Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) record, set a new global standard for correlation.Due to the high signal to noise ratio of non-destructive XRF core scanning data are perfect to form composite records from multiple holes. XRF data were generated as part of the programmatic post-cruise XRF core scanning of IODP Expedition 392 drill cores at the Gulf Coast Repository (GCR) at Texas A&M University College Station (USA) in June, July, August 2022. The raw data are open access available in the IODP LIMS database (https://web.iodp.tamu.edu/LORE). The for this study relevant data were cleaned from outliers, put on composite depth and are open access stored at PANGAEA – Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental ScienceThe here reported XRF Core Scanner data were collected every 5 mm down-core over a 0.6 cm2 area with down-core slit size of 5 mm from core section 392-U1580A-7R-3, 392-U1580A-7R-4-4, 392-U1580B-4R-2, 392-U1580B-4R-3, 392-U1580B-4R-4. Three runs with different generator settings were used to measure the elemental abundance from: 1) Aluminum to Iron – tube voltage 10 kV, current 120 µA, no filter; 2) Potassium to Zircon – 20 kV, 1250µA, Pd-thick filter; 3) Calcium to Barium – 50 kV, 750µA, Cu filter. The split core surface was covered with a 4 μm thin SPEXCerti Prep Ultralene foil to avoid contamination of the XRF detector prism and desiccation of the cores. The data were acquired with a Brightspec Silicon Drift Detector and an 100W rhodium side-window x-ray tubes. Raw data spectra were processed using the Analysis of X-ray spectra by Iterative Least square software (bAxil) package from Canberra Eurisys.
