University of Thessaloniki: Memory and lived space

DOI

The aim of the research was to document the history of the University of Thessaloniki through the lived experience of the people associated with it either as students or as members of the teaching or administrative staff. The reference period is the period 1947 until today. The research questions focused on the university as a place of remembrance, the relationship of the building and its "inhabitants" with the social and cultural history of the city, the daily sensory life in and around the university, and the memorial processes of oral testimony. Through the initial bibliographic research and the dialogue within the group, the following topics were selected to be included in the question guide: Life at the University (everyday life - interpersonal relationships - sensory memory), Perception of space and connection with the Jewish community, Political attitude and action , Student hangouts and leisure, Routes and neighborhood. The twenty oral testimonies collected highlight various aspects related to the material and spatial dimensions of culture, the social and political history of Thessaloniki, the history of the Jewish community of the city, the construction of the city and internal migration, education history and intergenerational relations.
