Dit is het verhaal van een Marine-telegrafist in Biak op Nieuw Guinea, in de tijd dat de Indonesische infiltraties ernstig toe begonnen te nemen en de Nederlandse aanwezigheid op zijn eind liep. Door zijn werk leefde hij erg mee met de mensen aan het front. Vanuit de MLD-barak deden de marconisten wedstrijdjes wie het eerst radio-telegrafisch contact kreeg met een schip op weg naar Biak. Ook het dagelijks leven van de uitgezonden mariniers in Biak komt in dit gesprek uitgebreid aan de orde. Later werd hij nog overgeplaatst naar Woendi, waar hij niet meer alleen als telegrafist maar ook als bewaker werd ingezet.
