2015 Assessment of Vegetation NDVI, Iqaluit

NDVI was measured in 70 plots distributed along 14 transects used to characterize the spatial variation in NDVI, as well as in 5 plots used to characterize the temporal variation in NDVI. NDVI measurements were performed from July 6 to August 3. Each 6 m x 6 m plot, designed to match the 3 pixel x 3 pixel spatial windows on the WorldView-2 images, was divided into four quadrants (3 m x 3 m), a 0.6 m x 0.6 m quadrat was placed at the center of each quadrant. An ADC multispectral digital NDVI camera (Tetracam Inc.) was handheld above the quadrats at a height of 1.5 m to take the quadrats' NDVI images. In order to ensure the proper calibration of the images for the light conditions in which the plot images were taken, the NDVI image of a white Teflon calibration tag was also taken. The raw images taken by the NDVI camera were processed with the Tetracam PixelWrench II software. All images were first calibrated using the NDVI images of the white Teflon calibration tag. Then, VIs, including NDVI and SAVI (Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index) with the adjusting parameter L=0.2, 0.5 and 0.8, were extracted from the calibrated NDVI images.
