Ash-Free-Dry-Mass and oxygen consumption of the juvenile cold-water coral Caryophyllia (Caryophyllia) huinayensis exposed to increased sediment load

DOI

The table shows respiration data, dry mass, and ash-free dry mass (AFDM) of juvenile Caryophyllia (Caryophyllia) huinayensis individuals exposed to a natural, a 100-, and 1000-times increased sediment concentration. Corals after a 12-week exposure experiment towards the three sediment concentrations ("long-term") and corals exposed to the natural and highest concentration only for the respiration experiment ("short-term"), were studied for respiration for 24 hours. Mean oxygen consumption rate of C. huinayensis was determined by closed-chamber respirometry. The values have been corrected for the volume of the incubation vessels, the background respiration and the AFDM of the animals and calculated to mg O2/AFDM/day.

Sample ID: The ID is composed of the sediment concentration (C = natural concentration, T1 = 100-fold and T2 = 1000-fold the natural concentration), the exposure of the animals (newly exposed: ST; from the long-term experiment: no designation), the orientation of the coral (H: horizontal, V: vertical) and the numbering of the animals (1-5).Individual code: The individual code indicates the labelling of the corals. The first letter denotes the colour of the opalite plates used to mark the screws on which the animals were attached, the second digit indicates the number of the plate and the last letter indicates the orientation of the coral with h (horizontal) or s (vertical). This dataset was generated within the framework of the co-operation between the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (programme: 'Changing Earth – Sustaining our Future', Topic 4.2), the Huinay Scientific Field Station, European Union's Horizon 2020 iAtlantic project (Grant Agreement No. 818123) and the Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences of the University of Bremen.
