Tlicho Aquatic Ecosystem Monitoring Program (TAEMP) - Whati 2014

The TAEMP methodology includes: i) Introductory Workshop - in June 2014, a one-day workshop was held with elders, community members, and youth from Whati to discuss the TAEMP. ii) Preparatory Workshop - in August 2014, a second workshop provided a forum to discuss water and fish health from a Tlicho perspective, and discuss final logistics for the on-the-land "fish camp." iii) "Fish Camp" - in September 2014 a five-day out-on-the land camp provided an opportunity for researchers and community members to work collaboratively to combine Tlicho knowledge with scientific fish-monitoring methods. Experiences shared at the camp were filmed and an educational video showcasing Tlicho knowledge with scientific perspectives was produced. Fish tissue samples were collected from the fish species regularly consumed by Whati residents under the guidelines established by Environment Canada for sampling for metals on Great Slave Lake and the Golder technical protocol: Fish Health Assessment-Metals. All fish captured were identified to species, measured (fork length to the nearest millimeter), and weighed (grams). Additional data collected included: gender, stage of maturity, gonad weight, and general descriptions of the contents of the stomach and the location of parasites. Fish samples collected included otoliths for aging, and tissue samples for metals analysis. Water quality indicators included standard physical and chemical parameters, such as: temperature, pH, conductivity, clarity, turbidity, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), alkalinity, dissolved Oxygen, major nutrients, ions and trace metals. These parameters are comparable to AANDC Water Resources datasets for Frank Channel of Great Slave Lake (the closest water quality monitoring station). Water sampling followed appropriate QA/QC procedures, and sediment sampling used methods outlined in the Metal Mining Guidance Document for Aquatic Effects Monitoring and analyzed for standard physical and chemical properties as well as trace metals. Lake sediments were sampled using an Ekman grab sampler. iv) Results workshop - in February 2015 results of the "fish camp" were presented in Whati to camp participants and interested community members, including a large number of high school students. The draft educational video was shown, and discussion of the results occurred.
