Mercury and persistent organic pollutants in liver of glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) from Eastern Nunavut, Canadian Arctic

Samples (liver, feathers) of adult breeding glaucous gulls (n = 31) were collected in June-July 2012 from colonies situated on islands off the community of Cape Dorset (Eastern Nunavut). Various morphometric measurements and body mass of the birds were recorded. Frozen glaucous gull samples for contaminant and stable isotope analyses were shipped to the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) lab (Montreal, QC), and stored at -20°C until analysis. Stable carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) isotope analyses in liver and feather (one breast and one wing (secondary) feather) samples were conducted at the Centre de recherche en géochimie et géodynamique (GEOTOP), Université du Québec à Montréal (Montreal, QC) according to methods described by Caron-Beaudoin et al. (2013). Mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) analyses were conducted at the Centre de recherche en géochimie et géodynamique (GEOTOP), Université du Québec à Montréal (Montreal, QC) using methods by Pichet et al. (1999). Glaucous liver samples were analyzed for legacy organochlorines at the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) at the University of Windsor (Windsor, ON) according to the Canadian Association for Environmental Analytical Laboratories (CAEAL)-accredited standard operating procedures (Environment Canada 1989). Glaucous liver samples were analyzed for PBDEs and eight emerging halogenated flame retardant at the Université du Québec à Montréal (Montreal, QC).
