Active Acoustic data in Makkovik Bay, Labrador

We conduct summer (June - August) acoustic surveys of Makkovik Bay with a multifrequency echosounder to document the distribution of pelagic fish and zooplankton prey. Surveys began in 2018 and will last for a minimum of three years. Acoustic measurements are continuously recorded with a Simrad EK60 echosounder with dual split beam transducers (38 and 120 kHz) mounted on our 28' coastal vessel Gecho II traveling at approximately 6 knots. During each survey, stations are sampled to validate the acoustic images and obtain further information on physical and biological parameters (CTD, HD camera, zooplankton nets with 333 µm mesh, ichthyoplankton net for larval fishes, and Niskin bottle for water samples).
