Ringed seals (Pusa hispida) samples are collected in the context of a community-based monitoring program, in the communities of Arviat, Resolute, Sachs Harbour, and Nain (for temporal trends). Previous collections in Arctic Bay, Grise Fjord, Pangnirtung, Pond Inlet, Gjoa Haven/Taloyoak, Qikiqtarjuaq, Ulukhaktok, Kangiqsualujjuaq, and Inukjuak have been used to assess spatial patterns. Blubber samples are taken for analysis of organic contaminants and liver samples for mercury and toxic heavy metals. Additional samples of meat/flesh, blubber, liver and kidney are collected to test for inorganic elements and organic contaminants along with a variety of biological/life history parameters measurements such as age, length, weight, body condition, stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon, blubber thickness, and lipid content. Data have been collected since 1991, and annually since 2004 from Arviat, Resolute and Sachs Harbour. Nain was added in 2012. This project is ongoing.
