Esther Raab was born in Chelm (Poland). Having grown up in a middle-class Jewish family, she remembers a "comfortable" childhood. Her father had many non-Jewish clients, with whom he could get on well. One of them helped Esther and her brother hide from the Nazis during the last year of the war. Esther had worked in a number of labour camps before she arrived in Sobibor in December 1942.
In Sobibor, among other occupations, she sorted clothes and other possessions of victims. She knew in advance about the revolt and prepared by putting sand in her pockets, so as to be able to throw it into the guards' eyes if necessary; they would then rub their eyes, enabling Esther to stab them with a knife in their stomachs. She survived the war in hiding with peasants in a barn. Shortly after the war she married with a Jewish Pole, whom she knew already before from Chelm. Polish anti-Semitism made them decide to emigrate to the United States. They got two children, whom they brought up in accordance with Jewish tradition.

Esther Raab is geboren in Chelm (Polen). Zij herinnert zich haar jeugd als comfortabel in een Joods middenklassegezin. Haar vader heeft veel niet-Joodse klanten met wie hij goed kan opschieten. Een van hen helpt in het laatste oorlogsjaar Esther en haar broer zich schuil te houden voor de nazi’s. Voordat Esther in december 1942 in Sobibor aankomt, heeft ze al in een aantal werkkampen gewerkt.
In Sobibor sorteert ze onder meer kleding en bezittingen van slachtoffers. Zij is van de opstand op de hoogte en bereidt zich voor door zand in haar zakken te doen, om als dat nodig is in de ogen van de bewakers te kunnen strooien. Als zij dan in hun ogen wrijven, heeft Esther tijd hen met een mes in de maag te steken.
Ze overleeft de oorlog door onder te duiken bij boeren in een schuur. Kort na de oorlog trouwt ze met een Joods Poolse man die ze voor die tijd al kende uit Chelm. Het antisemitisme in Polen doet hen besluiten naar de Verenigde Staten te emigreren. Ze hebben twee kinderen die ze volgens de Joodse traditie opvoeden.
