Waldbrände und extreme Wetterbedingungen: Am Beispiel von vier Hotspots (Amazonasgebiet, Kalifornien, Mittelmeerraum und boreales Kanada) werden die Ursachen aktueller Waldbrandereignisse untersucht. Neben direkten menschlichen Einflüssen, z.B. durch Landnutzungsänderungen und Feuerbekämpfung, spielen extreme Wetterlagen wie hohe Temperaturen und Dürren eine zentrale Rolle, indem sie wesentlich den Zustand des Brennmaterials beeinflussen. Die Zusammenhänge zwischen der globalen Erwärmung und günstigeren Feuerbedingungen sind durch höhere Verdunstung und trockeneres Brennmaterial in vielen Fällen gegeben. Sie sind aber oft auch, etwa was die Ursachen von Dürren betrifft, zu komplex, um eindeutige Rückschlüsse zu ermöglichen. Projektionen von Klimamodellen zeigen jedenfalls als Folge der globalen Erwärmung in fast allen untersuchten Regionen eine Zunahme von Waldbränden.

Forest fires and extreme weather conditions: Based on the example of four wildfire hotspots (Amazon basin, California, Mediterranean basin and boreal Canada), we analyze the causes of recent fire occurrences. Apart from direct anthropogenic influences, such as land-use change and firefighting, extreme weather conditions like high temperatures and droughts play a dominant role by essentially altering the conditions of fuel. Global warming enhances evaporation and dries the fuel at the same time, resulting in more favourable fire conditions. However, the interactions between climate and vegetation as well as the causes of extreme events such as droughts are too complex to allow for unambiguous conclusions in many cases and are not yet fully understood. Still, most climate models project an increase in forest fires owing to global warming in most of the regions investigated.
