Experimental sea ice pH from the Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF), University of Manitoba

A time series of samples from experimental seawater, bulk sea ice (new ice and up to 20 cm thick), brine and frost flowers were collected for pH measurement as the SERF pool froze under ambient winter conditions and ice formed. The in situ temperatures and salinities of these sample types were determined from temperature electrodes fixed into the pool, and from melted replicate samples. The pH was determined on melted samples at in situ temperatures via spectroscopy and the use of m-Cresol Purple and Thymol Blue dyes. pH was determined at in situ temperatures and high salinities using equations developed by F. Millero, which required only small extrapolations. See Hare et al. (2013) for details.
