Long-term trends in contaminants in freshwater fish (burbot, Lota lota) from Arctic Northwest Territories, Canada

Fish (burbot, Lota lota) have been collected by community members since 1985, with annual collections commencing in 1999 to 2017-19, and analysed for contaminants. Mercury was analyzed from muscle and liver tissues using CVAAS while PCBs were assessed in liver tissues using GC-ECD. Trends were somewhat stable from 1985 to 1998, but increased markedly for several PCBs and for mercury (Hg). Coupled with a nearby lake sediment core and climate data, our fish data show that it appears likely that climate change is affecting how these contaminants cycle, with ecological processes/biogeochemical cycles more important than atmospheric sources.
