Remote sensing reflectance obtained from spectral underwater upwelling radiance and solar downwelling irradiance measurements during POLARSTERN cruise ARK-XXVI/3 (PS78)

DOI

Remote sensing reflectance (RRS) at each station was obtained from profiles of upwelling radiance (Lu-( lamda)) and downwelling solar irradiance (Ed-(lamda)) measured with hyperspectral radiometers (RAMSES, TriOS GmbH, Germany) from 320 to 950 nm (3.3 nm optical resolution, spectral accuracy of 0.3 nm) . We used the same instrumentation, operation procedure and data analysis as in Taylor et al. (2011, doi:10.5194/bg-8-3609-2011) where we followed the NASA protocols (Mueller et al. 2003). This includes a correction for variation in above water solar irradiance (Ed+( lamda)) during profiling and excludes Lu-( lamda) and Ed-( lamda) data at depths which are still influenced by surface waves. Analogously to Stramski et al. (2008, doi:10.5194/bg-5-171-2008), we calculated Lu-( lamda, 0m) and Ed-( lamda, 0m) by extrapolating Lu-( lamda, z) and Ed-( lamda, z), respectively, from below the surface waves (at depth z) using the average upwelling radiance attenuation coefficient for a depth interval between 1 to 11 m, and then derived RRS(lamda) from 0.519 × Lu-( lamda, 0 m)/Ed-( lamda, 0 m). Data were linearly interpolated on a 1nm wavelength grid.
