Calculated sea surface temperatures for the last glacial maximum

DOI

SST (1-12) is estimated mean annual Sea Surface Temperature in degrees C at the LGM depth. SST res is the difference between the LGM temperature estimate from this core, and the core-top estimate made with the same faunal transfer function, in the grid box overlying the site. This gridded core-top value is used because some cores with LGM samples do not have corresponding core-top analyses. A modern transfer-function estimate is used, rather than an atlas value, to minimize regional biases in the difference calculation associated with regional residuals in the transfer function. Negative values of LGM-MOD reflect cooling relative to modern conditions. Positive values reflect warming. Estimates are reported here for latitudes -40 to 40. Note, however, that only values from latitudes -20 to 20 were used in the final reconstruction. This is because no cores from higher latitudes were used in the definition of the faunal factors -- thus we consider estimates outside of the tropical latitudes to be suspect.
